A4
My grandfather used to say that the mind can't work
if the be-hind is asleep.
I'm sure is research-based to support this.
Movement increases motivation, learning w/, helps Ss change perspective & supports self-regulation and social connection.

If a Ss isn't ready to learn, it is more difficult for Ts to reach them and for them to grow academically.
Like SEL it is not just one more thing. It is one of THE things that will help Ss grow and learn.

A1: Brain Breaks are something that many teachers in my building do. Some teachers will take their students on quick laps around the playground during the day to after they have been in class for an extended time.
Personally, I play SimonSays w/ class each hour.

A2. It has to be taught early and modeled daily. It can be like a basketball play at practice. Stop it, rewind it, and go by the 'numbers' if needed. Step by step.

A2: Teach/Reteach procedures and hold Ss to a high expectation during these transitions.
If movement breaks occur at regularly scheduled times this will help Ss. Routines are important.
Setting a timer (give them 30 sec or less) to get up and ready for the break.

Moving helps a student sharpen their focus, and mitigates stress and anxiety. Taking even 2 minutes every 25 to 30 minutes helps students.

A2: clear expecations based on building and classroom expectations, opportunities to practice before fully engaging, and feedback and praise when Ss meet or fall short. Lastly, safety first.

A4: Some people are fine sitting at a desk and holding their focus for a while. For others, it can be a stressful experience. Some people really need to move. Stretch their legs. Get some fresh air. It's a great stress reliever & can rejuvenate their focus.
