A root plate pond in the wetland. The tree came down perhaps 30 years ago and now has big trees itself growing from its rotting hulk. A small 🦫 dam backs the water into the hole.

Happy ! The vernal pools here in southern VA have experienced a mild winter. I expect an early breeding season this year for our amphibians. We spotted this Marbled Salamander on our hike today. I’m looking forward to beginning spring surveys next week!

Have you seen Wild Senna in the ? Be on the look out as it blooms in July and August. This native plant supports bees and it attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Wild Senna is also the larval host plant for the Coudless Sulpher Butterfly!

The New Jersey meadowlands were once a huge wetland complex only a few miles from NYC. It's been reduced and highly degraded over time but it still is home for many kinds of wildlife and is worth protecting.

Today, for the Park of the Day is Lockwood Park+Trailhead. Its located 6mi east of Reno off I-80 in Northern NV. It used to be a trailerpark but in 2009, river meanders, wetlands + nativeplants were added to improve the wildlife habitats along the river.🌱

Wetlands help improve the health of the Bay by acting like a sponge that traps polluted runoff and soaks up water from storm surges.
