Covered in shaggy hair varying in colour, these nocturnal, omnivorous creatures are widespread in Akagera but rarely seen. They are even known to scavenge.

To understand the leopard abundance and density in Akagera National Park, a park-wide survey was conducted using camera traps. In 2023, 52 individual leopards have been identified with further analysis of camera trap photos to be completed in 2024.
