One of the oldest depictions of the Ascension in art is this ivory carving, dating from c400. Christ is still without a beard here. Isn't it wonderful how God reaches out his hand from a cloud to grasps Christ's? This Ivory would have had polychromy. #AscensionDay
Again using #FrescoFriday as a catch-all for ancient #polychromy , this week we're sending our love down a well on the #Palatine in #Rome - a well that dates to around the birth of the Republic. Like other painted #terracotta from this period, this #wellhead is sophisticated.
Andrew Michael Chugg Fascinating. So we have the image of one carrying an amphora in sculpture form (with nice remains of polychromy). I still wish I could decipher the so-called offering on her head. So, funerary for sure.
Decimus Claudius Yes, I love this example of polychromy. Part of a sarcophagus, if I recall correctly.
