A fragment of the sessile oak woods rich in bryophytes of the southwest at Lickeen Wood, Co. Kerry. It's free from overbrowsing due to a fence and steep rock face, allowing tall bilberry and heather establish with nice displays of common cow-wheat in the field layer. 08/22

I had a long weekend in Scotland, losing myself in the wonders of their Atlantic rainforest's. I went mainly for the bryophytes, but it was the beautiful lichens that really struck me. Here is a thread of some of the species I saw (assuming I have identified them correctly!) 🧵

Although infested it is still a great site and example of what we are pushing to save. Definitely a temperate rainforest, with beautiful species such as Tunbridge filmy fern and abundance of interesting bryophytes (2/2)

Rose-moss (Rhodobryum roseum). Always nice to see this uncommon and distinctive species, classified as Near Threatened on the red list of bryophytes in Ireland. Unusual to see it growing epiphytically like this on a tree base? Cappaghabaun Mountain, East Clare

In New Zealand we have also enjoyed many interesting ! How about a short thread of endemic or nearly endemic and ?

This is /Treubia lacunosa/, in the Haplomitriopsida, the clade sister to all other liverworts, with bizarre anatomy

Epiphyllous lichens are quite common. For epiphyllous growth they do not seem to need such high humidity as do bryophytes. Here are Physcia tenella and a Xanthoria species on silver fir leaves in woodland in East Lothian, Scotland. Photo taken yesterday.
