QAIMNS, QAIMNS(R), TFNS, QARNNS 🇬🇧

For 70 years as the QARANC and since 1902 as the QAIMNS, everywhere the British Army have deployed Army nurse have been there to provide medical support. Tonight more QAs than ever were honoured to represent the Corps at the RBL Festival of Remembrance #WeWillRememberThem

This photo is my Great-Aunt who trained during WW2 and joined the QAIMNS to serve during the war in Burma, her stories were my inspiration to want to nurse. To all my female NHS friends who are my daily inspiration I celebrate and thank you today 💙 #internationalwomensday2021

#QAIMNS nurses served throughout #WW2 with the #BritishArmy in Africa, across Europe & all the way to the Far East.Wherever there was fighting, they were close by to care for the injured & save lives.Over bank hol we were at Audley End telling their story, with a focus on 1944.

Today we remember Sister Audrey Mary BLACKMAN, QAIMNS and Reverend James Gordon BROWN, Chaplain of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Both killed while on leave in Antwerp when a V-2 landed at the Teniersplaats on November 27, 1944. Both buried Commonwealth War Graves #SchoonselhofCemetery , Belgium.

Two known members of QAs who were at the D Day landings include Lt Col Maureen Gara RRC & Miss Gill Basant MBE. Others soon followed including Becky R Hilda Sharpe with Keirl Green Anne & Matron Normandy QAIMNS who are in this photo.

We used original photos, first hand accounts & nurses' diaries to prepare 2 displays. On day 1 one, we were in #Normandy unpacking our #FieldHospital . We thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the visitors & talking about the experiences of the #BritishArmy nurses.

Day 2, we were a casualty clearing station in #Holland . We know the nurses worked from a school house in #Nijmegen for 2 months, as well as setting up in a castle & monastery.For our display we were able to make use of a stable block. Audley End is rich in #WW2 history. #QAIMNS

I'm sure most Irish families are blissfully unaware that they had relatives who served in a military during WW1 or 2. We knew her as 'Auntie Marie', my dads Aunt who lived in Oz. Then when my grandparents died we found this photo of her when she served in QAIMNS during WW2,

One of may favourite plots is the QAIMNS, but don’t be fooled by the name as it includes VAD and the Territorial Nursing Service.
There are other nurses buried in Brookwood cemetery elsewhere, including Sister Vera Venetia Spedding.

'Standing Giants' of British nurses Mollie Evershed & Dorothy Field, commemorated British Normandy Memorial in a new installation in #Normandy for #DDay80 in June 2024. Dorothy (32) & Mollie (27) were #QAIMNS nurses on the SS Amsterdam Hospital ship treating casualties from Juno Beach....
