A cool project done with Virgile Thiévenaz and now extended further with Detlef Lohse and Jochem Meijer UC Santa Barbara's College of Engineering
Congratulations, Dr. Jochem Meijer, for defending his thesis: tinyurl.com/2c7ckl3d. Here: the young doctor defending his PhD thesis. Thanks to the committee members: L. Deike, RuiNi_lab, T. Terwisga, Vinod Subramaniam, and C. W. Visser,
Detlef Lohse and Devaraj van der Meer.
1/n 🧵Mixing in #porous #media is a non-linear process. The flow is coupled to the porous matrix, but the #flow structures may be much larger than the pore size. In this work with Chris Howland, R. Verzicco and Detlef Lohse, we study Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities in porous media.

For New Scientist I wrote about what happens to mathematical billiards when you let the ball have spatial memory - and it is very intricate chaos. Thanks to Mazi Jalaal and his team for insights and images from this cool study, which was published in PRL newscientist.com/article/242743…
Our article on Mathematical Billiard with Spatial Memory is now out Physical Review Letters

Here is a short thread 🧵on what we have done.
Might be of your interest if you like active matter, memory, topology, chaos, etc. or simply mathematical games 👾
