New Year’s Day talk Friends of Bruce Castle Park 🌳 with TottenhamTrees. Discussing how to read old tree landscapes by recording their fungi & beetles. Decaying wood associated species are hard to find & ID but they are the hidden key to unlocking the secrets of #WoodPasture .
On Sunday I will be talking about why too many urban trees are felled. Risk averse management, bad development, subsidence, greed and poor #arboriculture .

But unlike chainsawing, it can’t happen overnight. Perhaps in 20 years’ time ‘tree coverage’ in our Borough will increase. But the medium-term outlook is for steady reduction in urban greening.

I visited the Oakfield plane to witness Haringey Council taking the urban warfare component of the war on nature to a whole new level. 8 security guards ringing the fencing & guard platform up in the tree: jaw dropping to see this Orwellian & destructive waste of taxpayers money

Preserving existing trees is the other part, creating local groups dedicated to the care & protection of all trees in their community is also another, as brilliantly set out by Haringey Tree Protectors.
Finishing this month's Tree of the Month (2/2) - Giant Sequoia - looking how fast they grow with these google maps pictures from a tree planted by the Ranelagh pub, Bounds Green. Pictures in 2014 and in 2022. #HaringeyFavouriteTrees

Giant Redwood our tree of the month has red, spongy bark. This protects it from the fires that can sweep through its native range. Go up to a tree and give it a gentle punch. #HaringeyFavouriteTrees
... and here is picture of mature Wellingtonia cone (yet another name for the Giant Sequoia), December's Tree of the Month. The 'lips' even more obvious. #HaringeyFavouriteTrees
Giant Redwood (another name for the Giant Sequoia), December's Tree of the Month - large female cones - with 'lips' like all the redwoods. #HaringeyFavouriteTrees
Giant Sequoia, December's Tree of the Month - two trees in Alexandra Park in today's snow. Spot the mini Monkey Puzzle at the base. #HaringeyFavouriteTrees
Giant Sequoia, December's Tree of the Month, has male and female cones on the same tree. These are the small male cones. There are two other species of redwood trees to be seen in the borough, the Coastal Redwood and the Dawn Redwood (January's T.o.M.). #HaringeyFavouriteTrees
The Giant Redwood (Sequoiadendron giganteum) is our December #TreeoftheMonth . These tall evergreen conifers can reach over 80 metres in their native California. Our #AlexandraPark Alexandra Park tree is just 26 metres with a smaller partner nearby. #HaringeyFavouriteTrees

“This research will help support decision-makers to justify the spending on the resource management, research and maintenance of our non-woodland trees in the same way they do our woodland trees.”
