On this day, 26 May in 1953, Charles Evans and Tom Bourdillon returned to Camp VIII on the South Col exhausted after their summit push on Mt. #Everest . This day they had been the two highest men on Earth. (1/2)

Just 300ft above them, the final summit was tantalisingly close, but they could go no further. Had they done so, running low on oxygen, they would have surely died in the process.
