This photo from today shows a River Tyne kittiwake collecting seaweed as nesting material. Many nests are under construction and many already completed. Much activity is to be seen. Lots of eggs will be under incubation. It’s an exciting and interesting time!

Lots of kittiwakes working at and sitting at nests along the Tyne Bridge (Newcastle-Gateshead; photo: today). Warm and dry weather & quaysides busy with visitors. With more than 1,000 bridge kittiwakes present the first chicks will be guaranteed quite soon.

Some Tyne Bridge kittiwakes show interest in additional ledges placed due to the Major Maintenance Works. 5 or 6 nests are in work on the kittiwake Long Hotel (photo) above the river and ca. 20 under construction on further unintended scaffolding board ledges.

Tyne Bridge population has steadily returned since late February. Today held total presence at the bridge of slightly over 1,300 individuals with several hundred nests in work. Interest is shown in some ledges provided due to bridge maintenance works. Promising!

Nests progressing at Newcastle-Gateshead quaysides … see today’s photo of freshly built nest with adult at a quayside property (with poor deterrents). TKP and City Council can help to advise regarding deterrents. More owners need to engage with this process.

Sorry North Tyneside Council but this is another one I’ve previously reported using the QR code but I’ve done it again this morning. It really needs emptying asap. People are clearing ignoring the fact that it’s been taped up 🙄😠 many thanks

Seal pups clubbed & shot for their pelts: cruelty paid for by the Canadian govt. I just emailed PM Trudeau: it’s time to end this wasteful brutality. Join me here >>> action.ifaw.org/page/125291/ac…

Chilly day at Tyne Bridge (photo) where kittiwake numbers less than at the spring peak. Nesting season should begin in earnest very soon. Displaced kittiwakes have taken interest in mitigation and other ledges, but so far avoid their specially-built new ‘hotels’

Great to get to the coast for a beached bird survey with Linda at Druridge Bay, Northumberland. Found razorbill remains (repeated from an earlier month). Live birds during trip included spring arrivals: sandwich tern, swallow, blackcap and willow warbler.

This is a great listen on how the Bass Rock’s gannets are regaining strength and numbers after avian flu wiped out many thousands of them, and how North Berwick’s been affected by storms. Top work from Martha Kearney, Maggie Sheddan and Scottish Seabird Centre.
