Lovely evening at the Deepings Literary Festival talking about . Highlights: fabulous questions courtesy of Linda Hill, lots of cake, and catching up with a former student who I havenโ€™t seen for over ten years. Writing this book has been the best experience.

Latest job as an author was cutting the cake at the opening ceremony of the Deepings Literary Festival. The best thing about this photo is the expression on the face of the woman in green.

Spent two hours today mired in the annual faff of Spoken Language NEA admin. Never were so many filenames toiled over by so many English teachers for so little. Speaking and Listening ought to be so much more important than it is in the current incarnation of GCSE.

Just finished listening to Carol Athertonโ€™s Reading Lessons and found every chapter so interesting and thoughtful. This book has held my hand (as so many of the books talked about in it do) over the past few weeks back at school after Easter. I love love love teaching English!

Which novelist would begin their novel with a scene of two horses, one black, one white and blood-stained, running through the streets of London on a Wednesday morning in April? Feels Ian McEwany to me.

'Our subjects need to sing louder than ever before. They need to connect with what matters and build meaningful competence as a comforting tonic to a confusing world.' Really important, thought-provoking thread from Rachel Higginson FCCT.

Very proud to be part of the University English campaign. As a student, teacher and lecturer of English, I feel that it is more important than ever to champion the importance of English as a subject of study.

'People who grew up in professional families were now four times more likely than those with working-class parents to be in creative work.'

The arts should be accessible to all, yet many individuals still face all sorts of barriers.
