Universities are perfectly capable of handling student protest without being hauled into Number 10 Downing Street for a dressing down from the Prime Minister. They know the rules and how to walk the tightrope on the right to protest. It is just performative politics at its worst.

Why the New York Times is becoming an indispensable source of news. Biden’s pausing heavy bomb deliveries is one of the most important inflection moments in the last seven months. The pressure for a sustainable ceasefire is going to become ever more intense.

One of the interesting dimensions of this podcast is the quality of Ed Miliband’s questions and the knowledge that underpins them . Worth a listen for that alone !

An Israeli offensive in Rafah would be catastrophic. It must not go ahead.

We need an immediate ceasefire, the immediate release of hostages, and immediate unimpeded aid to Gaza.

Philip, you’re one of the better Tories. If you think the road to electoral redemption lies in leaving the European Court of Human Rights like Miriam Cates you too have lost it. Tory problems are far more fundamental. Your core ideas don’t work and the country knows it.

A flavour of the current despair in the Tory party. It is just reward for epic misgovernance - which even the better of them can’t bring themselves to acknowledge. Goodbyeee conservativehome.com/2024/05/05/goo… via @conhome

The Times congratulates Starmer for returning Labour to the “mainstream”and urges him to do more to reassure - as if today’s Tory party is mainstream and reassuringly competent. Such bias. The Times view on Labour’s fitness to govern: Starmer’s Challenge

Horrible experience with Vueling Airlines. Message before flying saying no baggage, only to pay twice and have them refuse refund. Result was 2 bags outbound, none on return. Gatwick desk tried to charge £80 to rectify. Customer service a joke - automated, cuts off. Emails ignored.

Remember the hue & cry over who could decently own a British newspaper (the Telegraph)? The same people oddly muted about a company which used criminal methods, destroyed the evidence and then lied about it

You have to admire the sheer chutzpah of a “ newspaper “ that leads with these stories after Saturday’s events. It’s like the Beijing Daily - in limbo until the party decides the line to take. Embarrassing for all journalists of whatever political hue.
