Now the #ThamesBarrier test closure is complete (see yesterdayβs tweet) some of the gates are in their reverse maintenance position. The gates are hollow so can be inspected inside when out of the water. And as a bonus some of the Dunkirk small boats chugged through today!

Itβs more than 40 years old, but I still find the #ThamesBarrier one of the most stunning, forward-looking structures in the capital. When lit at night it's straight out of a sci-fi movie.
The #ThamesBarrier is London's primary flood defence ποΈ
It protects 1.42 million people in Central London from the threat of tidal flooding, and has been raised over 221 times since it opened in 1983.

70 years ago, on this night in 1953, a devasting storm tide hit our eastern coastline, taking numerous lives & causing huge damage to homes, farms & industry. In response, seawalls & huge defences like the #ThamesBarrier now line the #ThamesEstuary , providing protection, for now.
