“Bad” King John, villain in Robin Hood lore and famed for adding (then rescinding) his seal to Magna Carta, was buried in Worcester Cathedral. His effigy is said to be among the earliest lifelike portrayals of an English monarch.

Deposed by his wife and her lover then murdered, King Edward II’s burial in the abbey (later Gloucester Cathedral) proved a saving grace. It was one of 6 abbeys spared by Henry VIII because it housed Edward’s grave - his ancestor.
