I'm so thankful to be endorsed by Dr. Freda Scott Giles, director of Linnentown, The Musical (an incredible autobiographical story by Hattie Thomas Whitehead about losing her home, entire neighborhood, & family stability to urban renewal.) Dr. Giles has known me for 23 years. 🩷

Someone recommended that I read 'Giving Voice to Linnentown' by Hattie Thomas Whitehead. It's a quick and good read, offering an eye-opening story of the impact of urban renewal on a 'liberal' of my hometown, Athens, Georgia.

Illustration I worked up about Linnentown in Athens, GA. A black town that was bulldozed so that UGA can expand its campus. Now are trying to get the remaining survivors reparations organized by the Athens community.

The Bottoms was a Black neighborhood north of downtown Athens full of homes and businesses that were demolished in the Urban Renewal work of the 1960s (concurrent with the same in the Baxter St./Linnentown area). Docs and photos in a Google Drive file: drive.google.com/drive/folders/…

S. Finley Street from Baxter to Cloverhurst Avenue has been renamed to Linnentown Lane in honor of the former neighborhood that once stood at this location.

Former residents and elected officials spoke during the unveiling ceremony today that also featured live music and cake.

Honor to Linnentown residents and descendants, as well as all of their supporters here in Athens. You are a special place.

I was so gratified to attend this ceremony yesterday, renaming a section of Finley Street on campus to Linnentown Lane. This honors the Linnentown community, a Black neighborhood destroyed using urban renewal funds in the 1960s. More info: communitymappinglab.org/linnentown.html

Today represents a historical moment in Athens history, an official long-term acknowledgment of the Linnentown community by the Athens-Clarke County govt. The official street dedication of Linnentown Lane will take place this morning near Russell and Creswell dorms @ UGA. 🧵

So proud of Hattie Thomas Whitehead and her achievement of not only giving voice to Linnentown but also bringing it to live theater.
