Starting my thesis this year on intercropping. Focusing on soil health. Keen to see if 2 species are just competing for nitrogen/water or can actually help each other out. Measuring infiltration, soil fungi etc. CWFS Riverine Plains Soil CRC

One of the most significant advantages of intercropping maize and beans is the way it enhances soil fertility. Beans, being leguminous plants, have the remarkable ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen into the soil through a process facilitated by bacteria in their root nodules.

Addressing the #1 reason most people thing intercropping is hogwash….or they try it and it doesn’t work.

Plants have lifecycles. Wheat is 100 days ahead. Sure…narrow rows max yields…but wider strips max plant yield.

Wider strips also max intercrop soybean yield.

I started doing this 9 years ago. I started with no budget, little understanding, and have heard every reason why intercropping is dumb.

It’s nights like this when you come to the realization that the worth is in the work. Making it work on your farm makes it valuable for you.

To kick off the week on a positive note, I'm heading to my intercropping farm to assess for any potential diseases that could hinder productivity. It's essential to stay proactive in maintaining the health of the crops to ensure a successful harvest.
