A viscosed preambule leading to death.
Certain harvestmen have unique glandular setae in their pedipalps, such as this Ortholasmatinae harvestman. In order to catch the prey, these modified sensilla extrude a viscoelastic glue. This time, a few tiny Collembola were the victim!

A unique cuticular hydrocarbon from the springtail Heteromurus nitidus. This new terpene type, a prenylated geranylated diterpene, highlights differences between Collembola and more advanced insects. See our article in J Nat Prod. doi.org/10.1021/acs.jn…

DAY 17

Pseudoscorpion from the 'pseudoscorpion rock' in my garden. When I turn this rock, there is a 90% chance of finding one underneath. They feed on cute little Collembola which they grab and paralyze with their pincers.

Today I discovered something I literally had zero idea what it was (read naturalist at peak of possible excitement!). Turns out it's a giant Springtail ( ) endemic to New Zealand, most likely Holacanthella paucispinosa at Koropuku Falls (Catlins) - how cool is this!

I added this Collembola coloring page to my shop (as a digital file). For a symbolic prize of 1€. May be of use for some outreach activities or just for your own meditative Collembola session.

Meet Masoncus pogonophilus (Linyphiidae), a myrmecophilic spider (one that loves living with ants). This spider lives in nests of the ant, Pogonomyrmex badius, and feeds on Collembola (springtails) within the nest. Not much is known about how it disguises itself from the ants.

Thrilled to share this Perspective led by our PhDs Universität Bern! We explore how climate change will shift Collembola's feeding habits and the broader ecological impacts of these shifts.
