Now that’s a REAL ! After posting about how the recent X1 flares wouldn’t have been considered so under the previous solar cycle, last night the Sun produced an unambiguously large event, clocking in at X4.4. This makes it the 3rd largest flare since 2017!

In addition to the large sunspot group and numerous solar flares, these two large prominences (over the Sun’s edge) have been stunning to watch too, even through amateur H-alpha telescopes. One of these broke apart last night, seen here in GOES/SUVI data
