The #oyster shell that started it all! #FindsFriday Reputed to be the first one discovered in 1942, by a farmer digging out a ferret. Contacted local estate agent and antiquarian, A T Morley-Hewitt, who recognised the significance dug a hole...discovered #Rockbourne #RomanVilla !
Rockbourne have several surviving example of pottery candlesticks, which suggests this was the main source of light. Making candles was a household task in the countryside.

#Frigidarium is the unheated room in the #RomanBathhouse - home to our best-surviving #mosaic . Main use was cooling down and closing the skin pores that have been opened when in the Hot Room. Cold pool was provided to refresh the bather.

Rockbourne Roman Villa's low stone walls was likely footings that would have supported a half-timbered superstructure, probably of only a single storey.

Stephen R. Cosh is the co-author and illustrator of the four-volume corpus of Romano-British mosaics. This mosaic at Rockbourne, now underground, was the worst mosaic he painted!
