14/5/2007 -ex-HMCS HURON (2nd) is sunk during Operation TRIDENT FURY west of Vancouver Island using gunfire and missile, final coup-de-grace was given by her sister HMCS ALGONQUIN. At the time, ALGONQUIN was using the gun removed from HURON.

12/5/1942 -In response to two merchant ships torpedoed in St Lawrence overnight, RCN immediately puts the Gulf Defence Plan into effect, stopping all independent sailings of merchant ships in the St Lawrence & implements a convoy system with RCN escorts.

22/5/1942 -SS Frank B. Baird (Upper Lakes & St. Lawrence Trans, Toronto) stopped SE of Bermuda to make emergency repairs to her steering gear, U-158 surfaced 200 yards alongside & began shelling the Great Lakes ship, until sunk. All 23 crew were rescued.

13/5/1951 -HMCS NOOTKA captures 7 Chinese fishing vessels in restricted waters off Korea. Using her sea boat to quietly capture each vessel in the fog & returning with the prize and crew. In total 5 sampans, 2 large junks & 28 fishermen are captured.

12/5/2011 -HMCS CHARLOTTETOWN fired on by shore based artillery off Libyan port city of Misrata by pro-Gadhafi forces. Frigate was engaging several small fast boats attacking port. 1st time since Korean War that a Canadian warship has come under direct attack.
