SHOWRUNNERS, WRITERS: Do you actually knowhow much your support staff makes?

I’m pleading with you - ask them. The answers will gut you.

So, fight for us.

Especially if you “don’t know the difference” between an SC and PA. (Recent quote!)

Just heard from a WA that her boss, after seeing the threads, asked if the studio was paying less than 1k weekly. WA is making 600. Showrunner is now demanding studio pay living wage and paying the diff until the studio does. 👏👏👏

I was once on a show where wardrobe spent $1200 each on leather jackets that only appeared in two scenes. $1200 was more than I was making in a week. We know the money is there!

We have some incredible support staff allies who will be speaking, including WIF and Think Tank for Inclusion & Equity! We'll be sharing more in the coming weeks, but we'll see you on Monday, July 10th at Netflix (11am-2pm!)

For reference, licensing a song for a TV show is 30-50k. Most assistants don’t even make that much money in AN ENTIRE SEASON. The studios have the money, they just choose to spend it elsewhere.

When I was a writers room assistant, I ran a workshop for others who were also in those jobs. The goal was to find writers ready for staff and boost them. So I know A LOT of people who are or were in those jobs. Here are ten thoughts on

I haven’t been an assistant so I lack some perspective. But literally every single day in the writers’ room, I think to myself “we wouldn’t be ANYWHERE without our wonderful PA, Morghan.” Nowhere.

Pay assistants. Pay assistants well. Then promote your assistants.

Hollywood is a weird place where you hear about upper level writers’ second homes while you and other assistants have a second jobs, live with roommates and are still rent burdened, and don’t have paid vacation days

Casa Bonita is paying their waiters more than any Hollywood studio is paying their assistants and a lot of mid level roles. And they just opened. Meanwhile Apple is now a trillion dollar company

I worked on a show where the script coordinator had to wake up every few hours, make sure the showrunner hadn't emailed the script, then go back to sleep.

no writers room could function without support staff, yet WAs and SCs are offered poverty wages by the studios we work for. we're writers, too. but when you're living paycheck to paycheck, how can you focus on your craft?

I accrued over 25K in credit card debt within my first five years as an assistant in LA and spent the other five paying it off. I've seen your budgets. Pay us more.

Did you know Disney+/ABC Signature are actively breaking labor laws by not paying me the rates my union spent months working for and don't seem to care at all? I love begging for a $3 dollar raise I'm legally entitled to with a company worth 54 billion dollars

I think this writers strike is resonating with a lot of people beyond just writers. It goes back to and well beyond that too - to the idea that corporations need to look out for employees (not just CEOs) and provide a stable, livable, fair wage at all levels.

I also want to point out that 871 is one of the more female unions in all of film/tv production. Male-dominated unions like grip/electric, teamsters etc. have far better wages. Most coordinators and assistants I know are women.

How does one survive being an assistant? Overtime. Free breakfast and lunch. Snacks that you take home so you aren’t spending precious money on food. It’s time to pay assistants a liveable wage. It’s been time.
