The lowest scoring whites on the NAEP (West Virginian whites) outscore the the highest scoring blacks (Hawaiian blacks), despite the fact that the families of WV white kids are lower in SES than the families of Hawaiian black kids, according to Stanford's opportunity Explorer

U.S history is our nation's worst subject.

Only 13 percent of U.S. eighth-graders are “proficient” in U.S. history, according to the NAEP.

When students don't learn history, as Coleman Hughes explains, they'll believe the worst kind of lies.

Despite being the more 'cultural' test, the achievement gaps on the NAEP's reading section are smaller than the gaps on its more g-loaded mathematics section.

We kept schools open in 2020, and today’s NAEP results once again prove that we made the right decision.

In Florida, adjusted for demographics, 4th grade students are #1 in both Reading and Math.

Maine students used to rank #1 and 2 on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). Today, they average 36th. What changed?

In a new Maine Policy Institute report, I chronicle the decline of Maine's K-12 education system over the last few decades. Here is what I found: 🧵1/

Top 10 worst performing non-Hispanic whites on the NAEP by state, from 2009-2019. WV is the only state whose whites score below the national average. 8/10 are Southern. I'm surprised to see Oregon on this list.

The top 10% and the bottom 10% have over a 100-point difference in their NAEP scores for reading.

What are the top performing students doing that the other students aren't?

It's equally trendy to claim that the abysmal NAEP results actually aren't alarming and public schools are good, but there are problems with this stance too:

- Whites and Asians vastly outperform their peers, so even if the numbers don't say what we think they do, it's bad.

Top counties by non-Hispanic white NAEP test scores from 2009-2019. DC and Manhattan at the top make sense, but some of the others are very surprising.

Biennial testing through NAEP consistently shows that two thirds of U.S. children are unable to read with proficiency.
An astounding 40 percent are essentially nonreaders.

Isn't it curious that the Japanese expect all Japanese to master the multiplication table by the completion of the 2nd grade, while the 2019 NAEP results show that 66% of US Black high school seniors are innumerate?

Based on the results from NAEP over the years, I think parents should be concerned about educational neglect AND misuse of their tax dollars. Parents, not the government, know best what type of educational environment their children need.
