<sigh> What I wouldn’t give for the opportunity to spend an afternoon walking down Broadway in downtown Los Angeles in the late 30s such as what we can see in this photo looking north from 6th St.

Back when this aerial photograph was taken in 1937, the tallest building in LA was, by law, City Hall, which had opened in 1928. It’s the tall, white building in the top right corner. No wonder it became an instant icon for LA—it really sticks out, doesn’t it?

A Southern Pacific Interurban streetcar takes the curve at Hill & 6th, , circa early 1947. The Paramount Theatre was playing “Cross My Heart” starring Betty Hutton. Two things we don’t see quite so much any more are signs for Chop Suey and United Cigars.

Currie's of the most popular ice cream parlors around SoCal. This one was at 1521 W. Whittier Blvd, Montebello in 1946. Their signature dish was their Mile High Cone. I’m guessing it was served piled high with ice cream? At 10 cents, it sounds like a good deal.

This Pacific Electric streetcar was rolling along the “Venice Short Line” route which went from to the beach via Culver City. This was 1945, so this route only had another 5 years before closure. I love the white Flying A gas station in the background.
