On a recent survey to a new site, Kiley found what looked like a decent nesting beach, and after entering some notes about the habitat quality, he glanced down at his feet and spotted this gravid female looking back up at him.

While Kiley often wears chest waders during Wood Turtle surveys, they can be downright uncomfortable on sunny days in the 50s, let alone mid 70s! Luckily Kiley is pretty used to getting his feet wet.

Making a guest star appearance, former Orianne Society technician Molly Parren is pictured here with a Wood Turtle at a site she knows very well and was kind enough to show us around earlier this month.

Severe floods in this summer flooded and likely destroyed most nests. Yet, the floods also created many new nest sites such as this one, potentially boosting nest success for the coming years.

One of the first we see at the start of each season is this male, #27, who turns up in almost exactly the same spot hiding in woody debris by the river in the early days of May. Let’s see if we can spot him for a fourth year in a row!

A few years ago when Kiley and Mel were tracking at a site in eastern Vermont, Mel had the good fortune of finding one of the telemetry turtles excavating her nest.

Most mornings, Kiley is greeted by this American Toad on his way out the door. It is common to have a toad live by a front door. Many insects attracted to porch lights fall to the ground, which attracts the toads.

Shortly after starting Wood Turtle surveys in New York this spring, Kiley started to see some familiar Wood Turtle butts poking out of the plant and woody debris along the streambanks.
