J. W. Waterhouse (1849-1917) associated beautiful women with flowers. In this painting the rose’s scent is evoking a strong sense of yearning. Its title, ‘The Soul of the Rose’, was inspired by Tennyson’s poem ‘Maud’, “And the soul of the rose went into my blood”.

“He looked from his loft one day. To where his slighted garden lay. Nettles and hemlock hid each lawn. And every flower was starved and gone.” Saw some hemlock yesterday so sharing a Thomas Hardy poem. It was used by both Circe and Medea to murder their enemies

If there's one thing the Welsh are known for, it's poetry. A personal favourite which is as scandalous as it can get is Gwerful Mechains 'Cywydd y Cedor', known as 'Ode to the C@%t'. It is a poem of personal power, celebration & condemnation of the patriarchy

The melancholic, bitter sweet love invoked in Annabel Lee, the last poem written by Edgar Allan Poe, speaks of a beautiful woman snatched away by angels. This was said to be inspired by a Charleston Legend of forbidden love between a woman named Annabel & a sailor

When Rossetti’s wife Lizzie Siddal died aged 32 in 1862, he was so wracked with guilt & grief that he placed a handwritten book of his own poems in her coffin. 7 years later he organised the coffin to be exhumed so the poems could be retrieved for publication.

Sappho was hailed by Plato as the tenth muse. Her beautiful words on love and on same sex attraction were later decried by lesser male poets and were banned by two popes.
You came, and I was mad for you
'And you cooled my mind that burned with longing'
