I thought Notepad had gone insane on me and was substituting single characters for certain character pairs, ... before realizing it was the visual effect of using the #CascadiaCode font, which features 'ligatures'. Switching to #CascadiaMono restored sanity!

JetBrainsMono is more pleasant in the alignments of spaces.
