These pictures are nearly 150 years old.

They were made by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, one of the coolest artists you've never heard of...

But times were changing.

Japan's borders were forcibly opened to international trade, then the Tokugawa Shogunate was overthrown in 1868. Chaos ensued: political unrest, war, violence.

This turmoil was reflected in Yoshitoshi's work and he became famous for his gory ukiyo-e.
