A few people have asked me for a transcript of the speech I gave recently about Curriculum for Wales.

Here it is, with a few useful sources linked in.

An important post here about the very real and practical problems with vague curriculums.

Vagueness is often the political solution to hard problems. But it doesn't solve them - it just creates more problems down the line.

The Curriculum for Wales needs more clarity and less ambiguity. The Facebook groups are full of comments below. It's not fair on hard working teachers to deal with such vagueness.

Just saw this on someoneโ€™s Facebook. Normally I just grimace and ignore these things but I couldnโ€™t bear to leave this one unchallenged.

It would be a disaster for pupils if there was no national agreement on what knowledge learners ending Y6 are expected to have acquired before they progress to Y7. We can't assume the PS nor WM are sufficiently explicit to ensure equity for all pupils in relation to knowledge.

As someone interested in reading, over the years I have found Debbie Hepplewhite's IFERI forum/website to be invaluable.

iferi.org is a goldmine for people interested in teaching reading.

It is well worth checking out (or bookmarking for later perusal).

On building a knowledge-based badly.
Watch out for this sort of thing Lucy Crehan Erica Stanford MP .
England's curriculum was rushed, many gotchyas like this.
A well designed knowledge-based curriculum has to mean a coherent web of knowledge

'This is not about isolated facts. In fact I'm arguing for the opposite. Isolated facts are what you end up with if you don't deliberately plan a curriculum around progression and knowledge.'๐Ÿ‘ So much brilliance in this talk from Lucy. A must-watch โฌ‡๏ธ

I'm grateful and humbled that world-leading curriculum experts like Prof Mark Priestley ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ฆ, Christine Counsell and Mary Myatt have retweeted or responded positively to my message to Welsh government.

I hope Welsh Government Education are giving it their consideration also.

A really important message from international curriculum expert Lucy Crehan - we are very lucky to have her here in Wales. I hope the Welsh government listen to experts like Lucy Crehan Rob Randel who are dedicated to improving the life chances of our children Lynne Neagle

Completely agree and hope Lynne Neagle will take note of this, consider the evidence and evaluate the current position for the benefit of all children. Teachers and leaders cannot work any harder but the opaqueness of the curriculum is providing a straight jacket to success.

Concerned about the Curriculum for Wales? Wondering why after 10 years it doesnโ€™t make sense? Desperate to know how we can set about โ€˜reforming curriculum reformโ€™? Thank God we are waking up at long last: Lucy Crehan has done the heavy lifting. Watch her brilliant 15 mins video
