it's interesting how the 50s, 60s, 70s were all were very crisply-defined landmark decades, in terms of style and culture

but none of the generations since then really had anything comparable to this

(90s grunge or 2010s smartphone era are not comparable imho)

I thought it had a lot more going for it than just that

Does anyone know of a good website that simply has URLs to debunk each of the 20 most common arguments against AI risk?

I'm tired of explaining for the 100th time why 'just unplugging' a smarter-than-human AI isn't a sufficient safety plan

I recently visited such a time capsule Barnes and Noble as well

The only difference I noticed from the old days: All the information in the computer magazines was already outdated by several months, and hence there was no point in browsing them like there used to be

Alternate universe where Bill Gate's Law was true, instead of Moore's Law

(It turned out nobody ever actually did need more than 640K of memory, all computation can be done within that limit)

That feeling when a contractor/maintenance/technician van arrives at your house for an appointment, but then they first sit in their van for 5 minutes (some sort of unspoken universal rule among contractors)

And you stand inside your house, waiting for the situation to resolve
