Coffee while listening for woodpeckers this morning on the Quantocks.
First signs of Lesser Spotted incubation - lucky to see a pair switchover at the nest.
More to find - please let LesserSpot Network know about any you hear or see in Somerset, Devon (or anywhere else!).
What a moment on Dartmoor National Park this afternoon.
Just standing still watching the world go by when I noticed a small bird land next to me. What a surprise to find it was a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and it was at eye level, plus she didn't mind me being there at all. 😀
Breeze didn’t help, but all three woodpeckers heard this morning on a loop walk from Dead Woman’s Ditch, Quantocks LesserSpot Network Somerset Birds
Some footage of the LSW RSPB Middleton Lakes Amazing to watch and great to get others to connect with this bird, showing every half hour or so from 630 to 10am yesterday. Staffs Bird News
I couldn't see or hear any lesser spots around. Then I noticed some chippings blowing in the wind and out pops the head of the male. He seems to making excellent progress despite the weather. Both females came by a few times. He had a look but kept on excavating LesserSpot Network
Really interesting behaviour to watch. Whilst a male made a nest hole, 2 females were shadowing each other very nearby for over an hour, often calling and attacking each other. Most probably competing for the males territory. LesserSpot Network
LesserSpot Network Male today at blaenbran Community woodland in South wales female also but unable to get a snap 😁
Pair of LSW on the Quantocks, but the only ones heard on a walk that took in six LSW territories from last year. More bright and still mornings needed! LesserSpot Network Somerset Birds
Gloomy first thing. Not much action early until the male landed on a dead tree nearby at 8. He began drumming, you can hear a great spot drum, then half a drum. slow motion section he exits quickly as the female arrives on the same tree. 820 they were gone. LesserSpot Network
Strange moment this morning when two of three lesser spots seen were involved in a game of hide and seek. This pose went on for almost a minute. LesserSpot Network

I took a day of holiday from work just to look for Lesser-spotted Woodpeckers in Surrey. It took 4 hours looking at two known sites where I haven't seen them myself to find a pair. This male called only once, the female on the other side of the wood was silent LesserSpot Network
Baba Yaga's Hut London Bird Club SurreyBirdClubNews LesserSpot Network Blean Woods in Kent is arguably the best place to see Lesser spots in the whole of South East England, and the whole of the UK too for that matter. Also the bird in Richmond is the only consistent LSW in London as far as I’m aware 👀
The female Lesser Spotted Woodpecker provided an excellent show at Richmond Park on Sunday, constantly calling and drumming for over an hour until we left! #londonbirds
LesserSpot Network Jonathan Dodds Tom Wright BTO Kent KOS Thanks from me too. Great stuff and sharing surveys between more people has been a huge help. Hopefully a good pilot for more extensive surveys in 2025.... watch this space 😉
