Maryland Senate candidate David Trone tells Julie Tsirkin he can relate to Black voters, referencing his childhood farm, which his family lost to bankruptcy:

'I didn't even have indoor plumbing. We had an outhouse. And I grew up in a family that was destroyed by alcoholism.'

Trone has stumbled on the subject of race - earlier this year he apologized for using a racial slur during a congressional hearing, which he said was an inadvertent slip when addressing Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young, who is Black.

Alsobrooks aims to be MD’s 1st Black woman Senator.

Both candidates are hoping to attract Black voters.

Trone says attending “public school”, not having “indoor plumbing” & “growing up in a family that was destroyed by alcoholism” makes him relatable.
