At 18, Jordyn Zimmerman’s world opened up when she got hold of a communication app on an iPad for the first time. She is a nonspeaking autistic woman, and hadn’t been able to use her voice to the fullest until then.

Now, she is a fierce advocate for others with disabilities.

Grateful to be able to share my story on CBS Mornings about how accessible technology such as iPad, continues to enable opportunities. It is my hope that by sharing my own journey, more people are able to gain access to the communication tools they need. cbsnews.com/video/nonspeak…

Today, with the assistance of voice to text tech due to my PSP, I spoke on the House floor in favor of my bill to rename the Purcellville post office in honor of Madeleine Albright.

Sec. Albright was a trailblazer & inspiration to countless women in public service, including me.

“When we are assumed to be incapable of understanding language, no effort is then made to provide us access to robust, language-based AAC that would allow us to prove otherwise.” Jordyn Zimmerman on SLPs as communication gatekeepers, at CommunicationFIRST:

The ADA is getting an upgrade!

Websites & apps are part of everyday life for most Americans, but only 3% are accessible to people with disabilities.

A new Federal rule will soon set standards and guidelines to finally make the internet more accessible. huffpost.com/entry/justice-…

Honored to serve the country in this capacity! 21 yrs ago, as a young disability rights lawyer, I worked at NCD.gov gaining deep appreciation for its important mission as a trusted independent disability policy advisory entity. Look fwd to continuing NCD’s policy endeavors.

I keep reading this “voice for the voiceless” idea across my socials. I cannot stop thinking about it and what it implies. Everyone has a voice— some need access or for people to be better listeners, but we are not voiceless (only silenced).

There’s a difference.

TODAY'S MUST SEE... 'Cause negative assumptions about folks w/Down syndrome can lead us to treat them in ways that turn those (too often negative) assumptions into someone's reality. Hot damn. This is good!

WARNING: Adult *&^%$#@! language.
