A big question looms over generative AI: what really is its impact on the environment? I spent months investigating a single campus of Microsoft data centers in the Arizona desert - designated in part for OpenAI - in an attempt to find out. Thread. theatlantic.com/technology/arc…

The Oxford scholarship inspired by the story of the Chōshū Five, a group of young Japanese Samurai who undertook the treacherous sea journey to England in 1863.

1/2 On the weight of clouds.
If data centres are a heavy weight to carry on, an ethical approach to AI and data in education should consider it.
Or, AIEd tools could be in huge contraddiction with a sustainable view of education.

This new book on algorithms, automation and AI in education has been a couple of years in the making, with about 30 colleagues contributing, so it's great to finally get hands on a copy. It's one for the libraries to buy - or preview our intro chapter free taylorfrancis.com/books/edit/10.…

Labour says it would use AI to spot trends in absence, as part of plans to tackle spiralling non-attendance. The party hopes AI would help to join up existing records for children to improve coordination between education, social care+wider services

I think its interesting that many providers of data-driven platforms and services claim to place learners front and centre, e.g. 'personalising' or 'adaptive' software. Promotion of data in education often seems to be 'against the institution'?

'Meanings' are open to interpretation, multiple outcomes, and messiness, whereas data promises objectivity, precision, and efficiency. That is perhaps the appeal of the 'big data' imaginary. But we also might find what people 'do' valuable for research?

And perhaps rather old-fashioned educational theory in the form of radical behaviourism. Is there any form of data-driven practice that can avoid the foundational focus on behaviour (via clicks in a software programme)?

Good point here - 'speak for themselves' seem to imply that data are objectively accurate and truthful, and therefore don't require any questioning about how they were produced. That seems like a troubling thing to assume in education
