In 2019, the far-right majority on SCOTUS ruled in Rucho v. Common Cause that federal courts could only hear challenges to racial gerrymandering under the Voting Rights Act, and not to partisan gerrymandering no matter how extreme.

For decades, federal courts have tried to protect the rights guaranteed by the 14th Amendment and the Voting Rights Act, until John Roberts orchestrated limits on protections against unconstitutional gerrymandering.

In 2010, GOP lawmakers devised Project RedMap, a scheme to capture state legislatures to draw extremely gerrymandered legislative voting districts, which often disenfranchised minority communities.
