Mood and Emotion: The backgrounds never feel static to me. They are part of the mood and tone of the moment. It doesn't matter if it's depicting silence, a bustling town, or a cloudless skyline...they help convey feelings and emotions.

Cultural Elements: Although I am fairly ignorant of Japanese culture and architecture, I absolutely would love to go there so those hints at another place that is just beyond my reach is both fascinating and enriching too. Even the everyday scenes.

Atmospheric Perspective: Depth and perspective in the Ghibli backgrounds always makes it feel like spaces and places are real - you sense the immersion without knowing it. Background and foreground are often integral.

Natural Beauty: Indoors are just as wondrous and mesmerising as the outdoors but those natural landscapes, real or imagined (well, they're all imagined, really) are both realistic and idealised. I find them beautiful and tranquil too.

The Use of Colour: There is this deep. almost ethereal lushness to the palettes in the backgrounds. As if the place is both real and fantastical. Vibrant and warm, they can suggest comfort and nostalgia

Attention to Detail: I love the texture of the backgrounds in Ghibli films. Not only are they meticulously detailed but there is always, always there incredible intricate play between light and shadow.

Tonight I need some uplifting so I'm going to watch #FromUpOnPoppyHill Studio Ghibli since Thursday nights are Film nights for me. I thought I'd write a little thread on why I love #Ghibli backgrounds too.
