Absolutely loved watching this reading from NOT A RIVER by the brilliant David Jonsson! Maybe the closest a translator can come to knowing what it feels like to be translated...

We could not be more honoured to have Annie McDermott lead a Spanish workshop at Bristol Translates 2024.

'The first draft of a chapter is like a shipwreck on the page. I return to it and keep returning; I tinker and fix and reassemble.'
Very much enjoyed this The Booker Prizes interview with Itamar Vieira Junior and Johnny Lorenz about CROOKED PLOW

“Martínez’s debut novel takes cabin fever to the max in this story of a grandmother, granddaughter, and their haunted house.”

I adored Tidal Waters by Velia Vidal, trans. Annie McDermott, which is coming out with Charco Press in May. The first Afro-Colombian novel I've read, the first to evoke the Chocó–Darién, the first to mention the Emberá and the Wounaan and the communities who are never given voice.
I spoke to the wonderful Anil of Harshaneeyam Podcast about rays, rivers and how reading Cormac McCarthy taught me how to translate Selva Almada 🎣

“Pump and reel, pump and reel. She’s hugging the bottom. Get her up, get her up.”
Here you can read the start of Selva Almada’s NOT A RIVER, a translation that taught me considerably more ray-specific fishing terminology than I’ll probably ever need again thebookerprizes.com/the-booker-lib…
‘Tilo, the kid, aboard the same boat, leans back, the rod butt at his hip, turning the reel handle, tugging the line: a glittering thread in the waning sun.’
