What’s a “bear box?” It’s the nickname for bear-resistant food storage containers. Bear boxes are a primary tool we use to protect bears in the park and we’re working towards our goal of having one installed in each of the parks nearly 2,000 sites.

One of the park’s most entertaining species is coming out of its burrows no matter the weather. Uinta ground squirrels have been hibernating since the middle of last July, and now they have a lot to do. After all, there’s only about three months until hibernation!

The night sky has inspired us for generations. Nighttime views and environments are among the critical Yellowstone features we protect. The night sky is more than a scenic canvas–it’s part of a complex ecosystem that supports both natural and cultural resources.

When you optimistically put away your winter clothes and hope for the best…

The Snowshoe hare's white winter coat offers camouflage in snow. By summer, its coat will be fully gray. During spring? Let’s just say it’s a bit of an awkward phase.

Did we fool with our April 1 post? Visitor reports of rare animals help biologists learn more about them. But sometimes nature does the fooling. There was the crocodile that turned out to be a floating log and multiple ostrich reports that turned out to be Great Blue Herons. 😁

Give them room, use your zoom! Always keep at least 100 yards from bears and wolves and 25 yards from all other wildlife—especially bison, elk, and crocodiles. 📸 🐻 🐊

It’s the wild goose chase time of year. Literally. Canada geese defend their chosen nest areas from other geese. Though often overlooked because they are so common, Canada geese can put on some of the best shows in the bird world when they’re in the midst of one of their chases.

Sandhill cranes are harbingers of spring in Yellowstone. You often hear their rattling, guttural calls before you see them. If you haven’t heard the call of a Sandhill crane before, you might wonder if a flock of pterodactyls has arrived! Have you seen or heard cranes lately?
