7/ HD facility closures, esp in rural areas, 2/2 ⬇️ HD pt population & ⬇️RN staffing. ⬆️rates of #LongCOVID in pts w/ CKD & txpl. Could this be b/c some ESRD pts got less remdesivir in early days 2/2 fears of drug toxicity? Need more research. Devastating impact of COVID overall.

6/ Tragically, unprecedented 📉 in ESRD pt population due to high mortality. Interestingly, ⬇️incident ESRD as well, as shown in her paper: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P… ESRD rates/incidence did go back up again in 2021, but prevalence didn't rebound, likely b/c lower in-center HD pop.

5/ Devastating stats: ~30% 30-day-mortality in ESRD pts who got COVID. Cumulative mortality was 18% higher in 2020 for HD pts, 22% higher in transplant pts. Fascinating full data in USRDS Annual Reports: usrds-adr.niddk.nih.gov/2023 Early on in 💉push, ESRD pts weren't prioritized.

4/ Worsened racial/ethnic health disparities related to COVID hospitalization rates. Rates of COVID among pts on HD were 40X higher than in the general population! Her paper here: journals.lww.com/jasn/fulltext/… High mortality after COVID in pts w/ CKD & ESRD, even higher in txplant pts

3/ Large #s of hospitalization in ESRD pts in 2020, esp pts w/HD. SNF exposures definitely impacted pts, as seen in Dr. Kirsten Johansen paper: journals.lww.com/cjasn/fulltext…
