Most of the times I've seen #Buddleja have been in gardens. This was my first encounter with Buddleja macrostachya, a SE Asian species, growing in RBG Sydney. #Scrophulariaceae Botanic Gardens of Sydney
How does anyone spot a tiny brown flower growing among leaf litter? Awesome observation, Alan! 👏👏👏
#Thismiaceae (or #Burmanniaceae ).
Buddleja indica was once known as Nicodemia diversifolia, but Nicodemia is now subsumed in #Buddleja . It was once a popular #houseplant , called Indoor Oak, but it has fallen out of fashion. Foliage is good, but the flowers are not much. #Scrophulariaceae #Houseplanthour
#Buddleja occurs in the Americas, Africa, and southern & SE Asia. It gets to New Guinea but not Australia (again, Oz?💁♂️). I’ve seen species in the wild in a few places. This is Buddleja madagascariensis in… wait for it… Madagascar. #Scrophulariaceae #Madagascar
Back in the 20th century, when I first learned Buddleja (sometimes spelled Buddleia) it was in the #Loganiaceae or even Buddlejaceae, but nowadays it’s in the #Scrophulariaceae . This peripatetic genus of 111 spp. is more than just weedy B. davidii (pictured). It’s #Buddleja week!

Fallugia paradoxa ( #Rosaceae ) has achenes with plumed, accrescent styles. The fruits resemble those of Purshia & Cercocarpus ( #Dryadoideae ), but morphological, cytological & molecular data support its placement in #Rosoideae . It’s like a Geum but woody.
The genus Adenostoma has just 2 spp., but both are endemic to western N America. This is Adenostoma fasciculatum, a common component of the chaparral vegetation in California. It is in subfamily #Amygdaloideae of the #Rosaceae . #California
Lyonothamnus is yet another monotypic genus from western N America. Lyonothamnus floribundus ( #Rosaceae #Amygdaloideae ) is endemic to the Channel Islands of California. It is not #cyanogenic , which is perhaps the evolutionary consequence of fewer predators on the islands. #CFP
