I've just had a history report back for this Oystercatcher 'TXH' that I photographed at Echnaloch beach last month. It was ringed in South Dublin Bay in Sept 2022. This is the third such Oystercatcher from the Dublin Bay ringing project I've seen in Orkney.

It's lovely to see and hear the Long Tailed ducks or 'Calloo' as we call them gathering in their hundreds and moulting into their summer plumage before setting off for their Arctic nesting grounds next month.

A magical Orkney spring dawn, windy and sunny. Geese were on the move, a Short Eared Owl surveyed the rushes from its fence post and Brown Hare's grazed quietly in the wide open fields. I saw my first spring migrant too, a beautiful male Wheatear, what a journey he's had!

I love simplicity in the landscape where very few elements such as complimentary colours come together to make a beautiful scene.

These big spring tides have given some good opportunities for photographing waders as the water ebbs. I always thought of Ringed plovers as dumpy wee things but this one looks quite leggy!

You know when someone asks you what your favourite bird is? It's difficult isn't it because most birds are pretty cool! and favourites often occur because of memories associated with people. I love Hen Harriers but Fulmars with their intelligent dark eyes get my number one spot.

The bubbling calls of the Curlew or 'Whaup' as we call them are synonymous with the Orkney landscape. They're a challenging bird to approach however and easily spooked so I set up a mobile hide on a likely bit of shore and waited for them to roost.

Just a simple picture of a Mute Swan but the sun came out very briefly and just elevated the light for a moment bringing out its beautiful plumage.

Hi folks, can you do me a favour and help fill out this simple form about UK tree diseases. The results will help Cameron with his University project. Thanks!

It was seriously gusty today with consistently huge waves pushing into the Bay of Skaill. The light was very flat but I like that in these conditions, there was a lot of sea in the air adding to the softness.
