Gloucester Cattle are an ancient breed that has been common in the Severn Valley area since the 13th century. They were originally a tri-purpose breed, valued for their milk, beef and as draught oxen.

The breed gets its name from the town of Aylesbury in Bucks, where it was bred as a white table duck in the 18th century. Large quantities of the Aylesbury ducks were used to supply the London market.

Did you know that following the collapse of Orkney’s kelp industry in the early 1830s, North Ronaldsay sheep had to be pushed off the land and onto the foreshore, in order to utilise the available acreage.
