I was greatly saddened to hear the news of Alistair Darling’s untimely death. He was a man of great integrity and will be remembered for his steady hand on the tiller at a time of great danger to the UK economy during the Global Financial Crisis. My thoughts are with his family.

Congratulations to Rishi Sunak on becoming Conservative Party Leader. The UK faces significant economic challenges and some tough choices. To overcome these, we need a party that is united and a government that is honest with the British people. I wish Rishi all the best.

Deeply saddened by the passing of Her Late Majesty The Queen. She will be remembered for 70 years of unwavering service - a beacon of stability in a period of rapid change. She leaves behind a nation grateful for her dedicated leadership. My thoughts are with the Royal Family.

Horrified by the appalling murder of Sir David Amess this afternoon.
He was a kind and considerate colleague, liked and respected across the House. He was also a deeply committed constituency MP who died doing what he loved - serving his constituents.

Deeply saddened to hear the news of James Brokenshire’s death. He was an excellent and diligent Minister, always courteous and patient, even in the most stressful situations. But most of all, he was a thoroughly decent man and a pleasure to work with. He will be greatly missed.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s commitment to public service was a source of inspiration to all of us. Those who had the privilege to have met him will miss him greatly and remember him fondly. My thoughts are with the Queen and all the Royal Family.

Honoured to join the House of Lords and delighted to be rejoining the Conservative Parliamentary party. I look forward to making a contribution to the important public debates we will have in this country over the coming years as we seek to address the great challenges of our age

The Government has made the right call on HS2 - the only one consistent with its stated ambition for the North & Midlands.
When the railways were built in C19th, critics dismissed them as a 'fad'. But they transformed Britain's economic geography then - and HS2 can do so again.

A great result for Boris Johnson and for the Conservative party. The Prime Minister now has the moral and political authority to do what’s right for Britain: to deliver a Brexit that guarantees a close economic partnership with the EU, and protects British jobs and businesses.

It is with great sadness that I am today announcing my decision to stand down as Member of Parliament for Runnymede & Weybridge at the forthcoming General Election.
My letter to the constituents I have served for 22 years:

Parliament showed last week it wanted to get on with the Bill – it’s the government that hasn’t allowed us to do so. So stop the self-indulgent focus on elections on both sides and concentrate on passing the Bill. If we’d done that last week, we could have finished it by now.

I believe in delivering Brexit.

But I also believe in Parliamentary scrutiny.

That’s why I voted for the Brexit bill to progress to the next stage, but against No10’s plan to rush it through at breakneck speed.

Now’s the time for cool heads, to calmly consider the Bill.
