Check out the new article from Asaf Levy and team!🥳They used structural bioinformatics to identify hundreds of new toxin-immunity protein pairs in bacteria. These pairs are part of the bacterial type VI secretion system (T6SS), which is crucial for microbial interactions.🦠

A lovely and very wise commencement speech

I know that there are many horrible things happening in the world, but the Russian army is running over Ukraine right now and that's heartbreaking. My thoughts go to the poor people (including our fellow scientists) who are being brutalized by those thugs.

This is such an elegant and intuitive protocol that Juan Díaz-Colunga and co came up with for assembling combinatorially complete sets of microbes. I've already tried it out a couple of times with yeast and it really does take < 1hr to assemble all combinations of 8 species. So useful!

That study would have been in my book had it appeared earlier! Amazing study of how new genes may emerge over time, with us being able to watch as it happens!

If I had $$$ to invest in science, I would spend most of it creating and supporting databases and tools for democratization of data access and visualization. So much effort is spent on data creation and comparatively so little on giving practitioners and public access to it.

I am deeply saddened by Lubert Stryer’s death. Just 6 months ago I had coffee with him. I was so taken with his open-hearted curiosity about science and people and with his generosity of mind and spirit. He touched so many. May his memory inspire us all. med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/…
