Thanks to everyone from the American Golf Industry Coalition who volunteered in the park today. An annual event for this group, they helped beautify the grounds around the George Mason Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial. We appreciate their time and skills. Great job!

The most decorated unit in U.S. military history, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team earned 21 Medals of Honor and 7 Presidential Unit Citations during World War II. Mostly second-generation Japanese Americans, they fought to prove their loyalty & patriotism. #AANHPIHeritageMonth

Unable to sleep, #OTD in 1970, President Richard Nixon made an early morning visit to the Lincoln Memorial. Stopping to talk to students who were in town to protest his policies, Nixon tried to connect with them, but the conversation was awkward. He left as the sun was rising.

We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to The National Mall, National Mall NPS, and the National Park Service for their help with repairs throughout the Memorial grounds. Their team of volunteers, 'Helmets to Hard Hats', restored many damaged lights back to working order.

Claiming 1,197 passengers & crew, including 128 Americans, the British passenger ship Lusitania was sunk by a German U-boat #OTD in 1915. Angering the public, the sinking - followed by other influential events - was an important factor in the U.S. eventually joining World War I.

As we get ready for Police Week later in May, we were lucky to recently welcome a volunteer group from Helmets to Hardhats to replace all the lights in the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, ensuring that visitors can pay their respects at all hours. We are very grateful

Hero of the American Revolution and the most popular man on the continent, George Washington’s triumph in the United States’ first presidential election was inevitable. Setting precedents with every action, Washington was inaugurated in New York #OTD in 1789.

Marking the end of American involvement in Vietnam, #OTD in 1975, an armada of helicopters carried 1,373 Americans & more than 6,000 Vietnamese out of South Vietnam to ships waiting off the coast, where decks were so crowded that some aircraft were pushed overboard to make room.
