1941, HMS Puriri, a minesweeping vessel hit a mine laid by the German Raider Orion and sank off Bream Head. Five of the ships company were lost - 26 survivors were rescued by HMS Gale which was luckily close by at the time

today we're remembering the 'Mother of the Navy' Emily 'Ma' Burrows - in the early 20th century she adopted the sailors of New Zealand. She was known by everyone on the naval base for her home baked goodies, and offers to darn socks etc.
