It’s 9pm…what an incredible chat! Thank you for your ideas, resource links and discussion! I’ve loved leading the REchat with Nikki McGee my fellow CTVC pilgrimage fan!

Really interesting question here from Bobby Seagull one of the pilgrims from CTVC show last year! He asks ‘Can pilgrimage be a solitary experience?’

I got back from an RE thing in London a few months ago, the taxi driver who picked me up had no idea I was an re teacher and excitedly told me about having just completed the Hajj! He showed me all his photos and told me about the ZamZam water he brought back!

Katie Freeman High quality clips from BBC (my life my religion). Hoping to use some of the clips from the new pilgrimage series next time I teach pilgrimage too.

Katie Freeman We include lots of imagery, so the students can 'see it'. E.g. the Picturing Islam images are great for Hajj. Also allows us to compare different types of pilgrimage. We also used clips from the Pilgrimage documentary.

Q4 There much research onto the importance of different ways of knowing when teaching about RE.  How can we apply this when teaching about pilgrimage?

Katie Freeman RE Today Services The Investigating Hindu Worldviews book from NATRE also has a set of resources looking at pilgrimage in Hinduism. This includes Kumb Mela and Varanasi. There are also some lovely personal reflections from Tanuja Shukla.

Just a thought, is it possible to go on a pilgrimage without realising it? Can you go on an organised pilgrimage but not have a spiritual connection or experience?

I loved taking quotes from this year’s pilgrims from on BBC2 back to my classroom, this lived experience helped pupils to think deeply about what a spiritual experience is and how these can be life changing for people!

Q3 The recent pilgrimage series on BBC2 features lots of discussion between people of different worldviews.  How can we bring this diversity and lived experience into our classrooms?
