College professor:

1. What do you mean by 'poor'?
2. Bad math: Facts = Beliefs + Should
3. Pick and ism, any ism
4. Say 'I don't believe in teachers, w/o saying it.'
5. Marva Collins is rolling in her grave.
6. Ending with 'as if' reveals manipulative, elitist sleight of hand

Led a workshop today and saw this note. Wow:

'It is professionally X, verging on criminal neglect to assign teachers instructional tasks while knowingly denying them the knowledge and skills necessary to accomplish these tasks'

The Reading League just shared a slew of Curriculum reviews. Notes:
1 Open Court's publisher response flexing history of results.
2 EL Education explaining 3 Cueing in early version was a bridge for teachers.
1. Aprendo Leyendo. I have to learn more.

REGISTER | May 14: Fewer than half of California students are reading by third grade. Even fewer Black and Latino students meet that standard.

What’s standing in the way of ensuring all kids, including English learners, read by third grade?

Love seeing churches starting to pick up this fight! Thanks to Oakland Worship Center and Pastor Steve Nation for the attention on this important topic.

Teachers often face withering scrutiny for applying methods learned in universities.

Many universities remain oblivious to the eventual impact of their methods/ materials/associations on kids.

It's slowly changing. Some are plugged in and solution oriented.

For balance. Univ of Delaware is a phenomenal partner to local school districts. They provide coaching, support, and teachers steeped in reading research.

They and Delaware St are BOTH strong with Reading Foundations. Del St is also great with selecting strong mentor teachers.

Specifics:
Northeastern (IL) took over Mills College (Oakland, CA) and seeks approval of an Ed program that incorporates 3 Cueing, Balanced Lit, running records, F&P, etc. In response to public concerns, they defend their methods and materials.

Literacy methods, gurus, and programs love to hide under the shield of universities.

Universities are responsible for what they teach, but they're also responsible for what they allow to be promoted in their name.

Donations to the endowment shouldn't buy silence.

Appreciate Ameer Baraka for speaking about dyslexia and the importance of literacy. He uses his platform to encourage, inspire, challenge people from the State House to the Prison Yard.

Ohio's governor is prioritizing kids; their well-being and ability to read is a big part of that. Everyone around him understands his priority, and it shows. Leadership matters.

Reminds me of the Maasai greeting, 'How are the children?'

Thanked Darryl McDaniels (DMC) for a verse that helped open young minds in education.

'I'm DMC, in the place to be,
I go to St. John's University.
And since kindergarten I acquired the knowledge,
And, after 12th grade, I went straight to college.'

Things i'd rather do than make my own curriculum:

Encouraging students
Bringing in items of interest
Internalizing lesson
