The cuts to the public sector are resulting in the loss of skilled and experienced people but also the loss of all the relationships they have built with the sector.

More will be asked of the public sector but the loss of these relationships will undermine their effectiveness.

Pat invites radical conversations about nursing in this podcast. Here we discuss how people (with a focus on nurses) are affected by an adverse event, the risk of compounded harm, and what a restorative approach might have to offer.

Already seeing academics tweeting about how much work they will do whilst university closed. Rest assured I won’t be working. Our work needs to be sustainable, healthy, fit into a working week otherwise we just set false expectations for ourselves & the next generation….

'They build up a relationship; it makes the process human. They work hard to gain the trust of the person and that’s part of the process – restoration of trust with a health service you are wondering if it has failed you.” Brigid Doherty National Screening Service Angela Tysall Jo Wailling

Great to see our paper on the potential for restorative approaches following harm, cited in this interesting The BMJ editorial by Bryony Dean Franklin on the need to listen to patients:

Conclusions resonate “the regulatory system of external inspection and its available approaches of responding to a serious incident in the Norwegian setting is currently not designed to accommodate the complexity of needs from stakeholders at the levels of hospital organisations”

Every health system has “taken for granted” assumptions built into their design and delivery.

Their effectiveness will depend on how these match the needs of those seeking care.

Good healthcare is about understanding the differentiated needs, not assuming one size fits all.

You can see here that the social discipline window (a tool widely used in restorative work for decades) is advocating a shift away from punitive neglectful and permissive safety cultures towards generative relational ones. You can read more here researchgate.net/profile/Paul-M…

Equity is a key relational principle and restorative health systems must balance voice and choice. Ask yourself who has it (or not) how is it distributed (or withheld), how is it enacted in system design and how does inequity influence outcome patterns for all the stakeholders.

The Hughes report sets out the case for redress from valporate and pelvic mesh and why redress should be restorative. Restorative Practice is included in the updated Patient Safety Commissioner strategy as a mechanism to combat epistemic injustice and promote human rights.
