It seems to me there's a difference between writing research papers and (e.g. PhD) theses/dissertations. While the 'we/I investigated' has become normal for research papers, the 'fancy' passive formulations still stick for writing theses '...investigated in this thesis'. Why??

A good day at work, as a Ph.D. student working with natural language processing in the social sciences, is a day where I find a way to skip reading or annotating text by using some fuzzy unsupervised word embeddings stuff

In undergrad studies, I loved citing chapters from such books in coursework (often without reading them). Hope the work of Dr. Mariana Madruga de Brito and I can help future generations of students make similar claims on the computational future of environmental sociology in their courseworks.
