Saw needle paintings, Mary Morris Knowles’ self portrait & Mary Linwood’s Salvator Mundi (both Royal Collection Trust), I’ve been wanting to see for years at the Tate’s “Now You See Us” exhibit. I didn’t expect to get emotional, but it was like meeting old friends I’ve only known from a distance

Back again to ask if anyone can tell me what Greek/Roman god is being depicted here? Print is from the second half of the 17th century and the figure is accompanied by Dionysus, Flora, and Hephaestus (if my IDing is right). Thank you and apologies for the image quality

Back briefly to say I have a new podcast episode out today about the history of crochet which I'm so hyped about because though I love to crochet I knew nothing about its origins! Its history is fascinating! Check it out here: buzzsprout.com/1075825/150751

Will be here less for a bit as I try to recover from one of my chronic illnesses freaking out. I'll leave you w/ De antiquitate Britannicae Ecclesiae, given to Elizabeth I by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1572 (British Library). Great 3D rendering here: skfb.ly/oJCZu

This circa 1840 bag was perhaps made by a schoolgirl at a charity or orphan school, sold to raise funds for the school or as a presentation piece. Along the top are inscriptions that read, “Accept this trifle as a mark of affection” and “From a young Friend”

So nice to visit Ham House again after a few years. All of the house’s many 17th-century cabinets were open, which was exciting! So great to see the structure of large wooden cabinets, which inspired that of the smaller, contemporary embroidered cabinets and caskets I study

Get a gander at these colours! This band sampler, circa 1660, is still super vibrant after more than 350 years. It's the rainbow in stitched form! Perfect for springtime

This patchworked bed cover was made by Priscilla Redding. She was born in Deal Castle, where her father was governor. There are few surviving early accounts about quilt makers, but hers is one of them. In her diary she wrote about her life and recorded family births and deaths

Not that Bridgerton is ever going for accuracy but if they were I feel like tambour work would get a shout out, since tambour whitework was rocking the Regency era embroidery world

Can't believe I submitted my thesis a year ago today. Feels fitting (and haunting) to be spending part of today abridging my first thesis chapter for the upcoming Witney Antiques catalogue. What a year it's been!

It's relatively rare to get a surviving sweet bag and its matching pin cushion still together, so I'm always excited to see this pair

Happy anniversary to my list of Quaker names. I could not have envisioned that names like Experience Cuppage and Gey Poope would spawn fan fiction, children’s improv routine, and legal name changes. Little could the early Quakers have known their impact!

My dad is an eBay pro and I benefit massively from that. Today I came home to the glorious surprise of an 1821 sampler by Hannah Child. I love Hannah’s depiction of a tiger and her slightly joyful rendition of the crucifixion. Thanks, dad!!
